Repeat prescriptions

 Medicines supply

Care is needed in prescribing, sourcing, storage, dispensing, and providing information about medicines for your pets.

We require 48 hours’ notice for a repeat prescription.  A surcharge is made if a prescription request is required in less than 48 hours.

We require a minimum of 6 months between repeat prescriptions for a check-up with the vet.  Sometimes this interval is less, each case being decided by the veterinary surgeon.

Clients should check their medicines before they leave the building with them, because once they have been purchased and left the practice, they cannot be returned.  The practice makes no refunds for medicines because they cannot be resold.

The practice does have a system in place to be able to offer written prescriptions, and clients need to decide whether or not they wish to use this service BEFORE they leave the consulting room.  There is a 48 hour time requirement to meet a request for a written prescription.

As a veterinary practice, we have to comply with many Medicines’ Regulations, one of which is the Cascade System which requires us to prescribe a veterinary licensed product wherever possible, and whenever available.  Sometimes, there is no veterinary licensed product for the treatment of a particular clinical condition, and in some of these cases it is difficult for the practice to source a supply of the human drug needed.  In some cases the vet will need to write a prescription for a fee payable to the practice to enable the client to purchase the medicine from a chemist.  In nearly every case of a pet of a species other than a dog or a cat, there are no veterinary licensed drugs available, and so clients should be aware that the vet will be prescribing and using drugs with a license for humans but no specific license for the small animals.

A notice of our top 10 selling POM’s (prescription only medicines) with their prices used to be posted in the waiting room. This is no longer a legal requirement, but please ask for our 'PROMOTION PRICES' in which we have many offers particulary on prescription flea and worm products, as well as long term medications.  This can save you lots of money and help you in providing the best care for your pets.  This can help to save you the client £hundreds of even £thousands of pounds (depending on the individual case and medical needs) and help to keep your pets happy, healthier for longer.

In keeping with the encouragement of the Medicines Law, Astonlee ONLYoffers our special promotion prices for long term medications in cases where clients bring their pets for their regular health assessments and diagnostic tests needed for any particular clinical condition with the veterinary surgeon.  This means that the best care is delivered for as many of our patients as possible.

After almost 10 years' of explaining how prescriptions work and how we provide the best care for your pets, we still receive queries from clients every week asking 'why do I need to bring my pet in for a checkup and/or a blood test because it seems to me that you are only trying to make money out of me?'  The answer which we have worked on for 10 years is that we aim to ensure that every prescription we write is accurate and based on the proper assessment of your pet's needs for safety and whether or not it has side effects that would adversely affect your pet's health or even in some cases actually kill your pet from kidney failuyre for one example.  Nobody wants to get angry because a loved pet is damaged by faiuling mto follow proper prescribing procedures so we always ensure this is done properly even if some clients complain about having to follow the correct porocedures.  Our promotion prices for long term medications mean that we are passing on our best prices to our clients from the drug manufacturers, but we have to pay our staff to provide you with the personal service of good receptionists, nurses, night care and veterinary surgeons, plus our administrative staff, all of which is part of running the practice which is a caring business.

Medicines Law changes from time to time, but this information is correct at April 2015.

Consulting room procedures.

It is similarly important to note that discussions and decisions in the consulting room do lead to irrevocable choices being made about whether or not to perform diagnostic tests, operations or in some cases euthanasia.  Once these decisions are made in the consulting room, they cannot be undone.
